Baby feeding FAQs
Quick answers to common questions about feeding and getting support.
How often should I feed my newborn?
Follow your baby’s feeding cues rather than a strict timetable. Breastfed newborns commonly feed at least 8 times in 24 hours during the first few weeks, including at night. Babies may feed more often during periods of cluster feeding.
How can I tell when my baby is hungry?
Early feeding cues include sucking their fists, licking their lips, moving their head and mouth, wriggling and opening their mouth as if searching for the breast or bottle. Crying is a late hunger cue, so try to offer a feed before your baby becomes distressed.
How do I know if my breastfed baby is getting enough milk?
Look for rhythmic sucking and swallowing, rounded cheeks during feeds, a content baby after most feeds and steady weight gain after the first few days. From day 5, at least 6 heavy wet nappies in 24 hours is another useful sign. Ask your midwife, health visitor or breastfeeding specialist if you are concerned.
Should breastfeeding hurt?
The first few sucks may feel strong, but feeding should not remain painful. A wide mouth, chin touching the breast and rounded cheeks are signs of a good attachment. Ask a midwife, health visitor or breastfeeding specialist to watch a feed if pain continues or your nipples become damaged.
Does my baby need to burp after every feed?
Not every baby needs to burp after every feed. Watch your baby and offer a short break if they seem uncomfortable, have reflux or colic, or show that they need to pause. Hold them upright and gently rub or pat their back. Bringing up a small amount of milk can be normal.
How can I bottle feed my baby safely?
Hold your baby close in a semi-upright position and keep the bottle nearly horizontal so the milk does not flow too quickly. Never prop the bottle or leave your baby feeding alone. Sterilise bottles and teats until at least 12 months, make formula one feed at a time exactly as directed, and discard milk left after a feed.
