How often should I bathe my newborn?
A newborn does not need a bath every day. Two or three baths a week is usually enough, although you can bathe them more often if you both enjoy it. Plain water is best for their skin during the first month.
How should I care for the umbilical cord stump?
Keep the cord stump clean and dry and let it separate naturally. It usually dries and drops off after about a week, although timing varies. Tell your midwife, health visitor or GP if you notice bleeding or discharge.
How often should I change my newborn’s nappy?
Change a wet or dirty nappy as soon as possible to help prevent soreness and nappy rash. Newborns may need around 10 to 12 changes a day. Clean gently, dry the skin folds and never leave your baby unattended on a changing table.
What should newborn poo look like?
The first poo is usually sticky and greenish-black and is called meconium. After a few days it normally becomes yellow or mustard coloured. Breastfed poo is often runny, while formula-fed poo is usually firmer and darker. Speak to your health visitor or GP about pale poo, blood, or a definite worrying change.
When is a newborn temperature an emergency?
A temperature of 38°C or higher in a baby under 3 months needs urgent medical advice. Call NHS 111 or seek an urgent GP appointment. Call 999 or go to A&E if your baby also has serious symptoms such as breathing difficulty, blue or grey skin, a rash that does not fade, a seizure, or being difficult to wake.
How can I bathe my newborn safely?
Prepare everything before you start, fill the bath with cold water before adding hot water, mix it well and check it with your elbow. Support your baby’s head and shoulders and keep their head clear of the water. Never leave a baby alone in the bath, even for a second.
